In the last decade, The West Bengal University of Technology being a Centre of Excellence seamlessly engaged in National Building Exercise.
The basic objective of the University is to organize undergraduate and post graduate courses of study in Engineering, Technology & Management, also in emerging areas with a view to produce young scientists, technologist and manager of high caliber, capable of contributing towards development of the country. The University is also to develop as a Centre of Excellence for higher studies and Research in mentioned areas.
The University which began its operation only with 30 colleges mostly undergraduate, now has strength of 217 colleges with significant presence of Post Graduate courses. It slowly but gradually became the largest affiliating University in short span of time promoting Education and Research and fulfilling its objective in true sense.
The increase of Post Graduate courses has provided the University an edge advantage and helped the education arena to meet the gap of future Human Resource in Education.
The Quality improvement of education and its appraisal is a major initiative taken by the University. The Grand Viva-voce is one of its examples. It is treated as a tool to assess the Post Graduate Programme in Technology in its affiliated colleges.
The University is continuously and effortlessly busy in up gradation of Education in West Bengal with the help of UGC, AICTE and State Government. It has always supported the innovation in education. The major example of it is the idea of conferring Autonomy to its affiliated Institutions which is perceived in the backdrop of TEQIP Programme. The rules and regulation are under frame for declaration of autonomy to its affiliated institutions.
The Research & Development activity at the University has increased in many folds. In the last financial year 2011-12 it received funds from different agencies for R&D purpose which crossed a benchmark. It is expected that the trend will continue and encourage the young minds towards a result oriented research.
The UGC under its 12th Plan period provide grant-in-aid which would further help in generate resources for constant improvement of Education & Research.
Another addition in improvement of education is the proposal to set up a Teachers’ Training & Development College in assistance with UGC under National Mission on Teachers and Teaching. This initiative will help to enrich our faculty as well as the faculty of our affiliated Colleges for innovation in teaching.
Today we have 1.7 lac student strength and approximately 28000 students are going to complete their degree in different streams adding in the strength of National pool of talents. Under this volume, the University is performing efficiently with few issues like space and manpower. The University in its current space has taken a shape of “MAMOTH” and is under severe scarcity of space to expand further any of its operation. Its Future campus is under construction at Haringhata, Nadia. It is expected that very soon the University can move to its earmarked campus. Though the University is under preoccupation for improvement of education, it never gave up its social responsibility and tried its best to reach its needy student through its Student Welfare Activity programmes like Full Freeship and Half Freeship for continuing their education.
